Since 2003 the entity multiple myeloma is represented within the Competence Network Malignant Lymphomas by the two
German study groups, DSMM (Prof. Einsele, Dr. Straka) and GMMG (Prof. Goldschmidt). The co-operation between both
groups is used to advance progress in myleoma treatment by the conduction of common clinical studies as well as common
efforts in basic research. Among others, the groups aim to further extend their cell, serum and DNA material banks.
Such biobanks will be essential for treatment-associated research and will allow the initiative for clinical studies on
cytogenetics, genomics and proteomics that can be correlated to the clinical outcome of myeloma therapy.
Current clinical studies investigate the improvement of high-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell
transplantation. Also in focus is the evaluation of the role of Graft-versus-myeloma reaction of allogeneic stem cell
transplantation. Further clinical studies are conducted to improve diagnostic and prognostic tests by the use of DNA
CHIP analysis.
