In 1996 the German CLL Study Group (GCLLSG) was founded by Prof. Dr. M. Hallek (Klinikum der Universität zu Köln,
Cologne) and Prof. Dr. B. Emmerich (Klinikum Innenstadt, Munich) with the ambition to optimize diagnostics and therapy
of Chronic Lymphatic Leukaemia in controlled, prospective clinical trials.
Due to new prognostic parameters (cytogenetics, serum parameters) and new chemo-/immunotherapies the approaches for
diagnostics and therapy of CLL have changed. The recent findings concerning diagnostics and therapies of CLL need to be
systematically analysed in controlled clinical trials. Since 1997 several protocols (phase I - III) have been activated
by the DCLLSG, comprising the treatment of patients in all stages of CLL. The study group is sponsored by the Deutsche
Krebshilfe since 1999. One main aspect of the work of the study group is the cooperation with practising oncologists in
order to provide a large number of ambulant patients with state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapy.
